Emblematic in this respect is the monumental polychrome stained-glass window in the apse of the transept of the Santuario di Nostra Signora della Salute in Turin, at the base of which stands the marble and crystal urn containing the body of San Leonardo Murialdo (1828–1900).

Using the traditional leaded stained-glass technique, 13,000 pieces of mouth-blown glass were cut over two years of work in the early 1990s. For the entire window, it was necessary to construct a similar structure at the Gibo workshops in the Verona area so that Piattella’s design could be developed at full scale. The window has the form of an apse 6 m in diameter and measures 17 m in height and 10 m in width.

In 1992, on the occasion of its presentation, Piattella himself described it as follows: “an initial sense of ascent comes from the upward explosion of this red mass, whose smallest fragments reach the very top of the vault against a ground of blues of varying depth, their sinuous divisions expressing cosmic matter in perpetual motion. Moreover, the blues, ranging from pale whitish-blue tones to shades possessing the depth of night, express the elusive remoteness of the cosmos. Then, in the upper part of the stained-glass window, this blue universe also explodes: its fragments almost dissolve into the dome, rich in infinite colours, where yellows predominate alongside broad areas of luminous green, the colour symbolising the divinity towards which everything is directed and which embraces all things through an almost invisible, salvific rain of equally green flames descending along the entire window. Thus, three moments to signify the human, the cosmic, the divine”.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://staging.archiviopiattella.it/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/2023-03-06-0002-scaled.jpg” title_text=”2023-03-06-0002″ _builder_version=”4.22.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_gallery gallery_ids=”2660,2659,2657,2658″ show_title_and_caption=”off” _builder_version=”4.22.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_gallery][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Stained-Glass Apse of San Leonardo Murialdo Less well known is Piattella’s creative activity beyond the two-dimensional surface of the painting.
